Put your best foot forward this holiday season by making the most fantastic mashed potatoes that everybody will rave over!!! These 7 tips are easy, but most people don’t know to do.

  1. Not ever potato can be used for mashed potatoes. The best chefs lean towards the Yukon Gold potato variety, so that’s what I always use.

  1. Cut your potatoes into BIG pieces. If you cut your potatoes small, it provides more access area for water to enter, which results in inferior mashed potatoes.

  1. Generously salt the water your big potato pieces are boiling in. This is the opportunity to add flavor to your end result.

  1. Once the potatoes are soft, but NOT MUSHY, drain them, turn the burner off and place the pot back onto the burner. The purpose here to be dry out the potatoes briefly of any water before you proceed to mash them. Watch them closely and stir a few times for about 2 minutes total.
  2. Add fat before you introduce the milk/cream. For the best results, heat your butter until its just melted and add to the hot potatoes. For special occasions I add cream cheese at this stage.

  1. Heat your milk or heavy cream until just warm, then add to the buttery potatoes.

  1. At this stage you will begin to mix your potatoes, but be careful not to overmix!
    1. Note: There are many schools of thought on how to best mash your potatoes, including mashing with the standard potato masher utensil or using a potato ricer. Experiment and see which you like the best.

NOTE: You will want to add salt and pepper throughout the mixing process and keep taste testing to determine when you’ve added the right amount.
