So, another year is upon us. Welcome 2022!
Not only another year, but our second January under the dark umbrella of the COVID pandemic. Did you reach your goals for 2021 or did you get sidetracked?
I’ve talked to many people and found a common trend that due to the stress of the pandemic and how it has altered our lives, goals were something that got neglected more often than not.
With the latest COVID variant, Omicron, sweeping its ugly head across the world we can safely assume that the pandemic is not going anywhere in 2022.
Experts have found that not setting goals leads to living an average life. Aim at nothing and you’ll achieve nothing.
People who have goals are 10 times more successful than those without goals, a Harvard Business study found.
Why set goals, you may ask. Because the overall purpose of goal setting is to propel us forward and spark positive change in our lives. At this time more than ever, we need change. We need to propel ourselves forward and get out of the rut that COVID has dug for so many of us.
The first step for success at goal setting is to identify specific goals and write out a plan of how you intend to achieve them. Throughout this process be realistic about the steps and timeframe. It is not going to help you or do you any good if you set unrealistic goals that will only frustrate you.
Writing your goals down on paper helps you clarify and strengthen your intentions for reaching them.
Being clear and concise about the purpose of your goals will help you in the long run. The tasks you set for yourself need to be specific and realistic.
By breaking down your goals into small and manageable steps, this will help you avoid feeling overwhelmed and help keep you on track towards achieving your goals.
Make a point of assessing your progress along the way. This will help you to stay focused, meet your deadlines, and reap the rewards of knowing you’re that much closer to ultimately achieving your desired outcome.
When setting your milestones, be specific with your measurable goals. Include dates, amounts, times, and financial numbers, if applicable.
Another key element as you sit down and write your goals is to ensure the goals have a realistic target start date and a target finish date associated with them. Having set deadlines in place will serve to keep you focused and motivated to keep working towards the individual milestones within the overall goal.
The goals you make need to be both realistic and attainable. If it’s not achievable, then the goal isn’t smart.
You want to ensure that the goal you’re aiming for will be worth the time and effort you put into it. Ask yourself: Will this produce a positive change in my life?
Remember, goal-setting in psychology is an essential tool for self-motivation and self-drivenness
Great things in life don’t always come easily, but great things are very achievable.
Stay focused, be specific, work hard and you will see results.
